Is the Heckler & Koch CC9 Worth the Hype?
By Kenzie Fitzpatrick
Heckler & Koch is a name everyone knows, whether they’re fans of the MP5 submachine gun, the G3 rifle, or the VP9 pistol. Most gun owners have at least one HK firearm in their arsenal or are on the opposite side of the spectrum and have a collection of HK guns. While these guns have been around for years and have become icons in gun culture, the latest offering from Heckler & Koch is one I hope also to see adopted by the masses. I’m talking about the new CC9. It was released on October 16, 2024, and is the first firearm from HK manufactured at its USA facility, located in Columbus, Georgia. Not only is it the first USA-built HK, but it is also the smallest pistol HK has ever made.
As a writer, firearms instructor, and competitive shooter in the industry, I had several opportunities in 2025 to test-fire the CC9, but only with a magazine or two before it was the next person’s turn to shoot. It wasn’t until the HKPro 5 event, hosted at Where Our Families Train (W.O.F.T.) this year, that I got hands-on experience with the pistol and truly got a feel for it. Not even a month later, I found myself concealed carrying one every day. I can’t tell you how many guns I have shot in my life, but I can tell you exactly how many guns I have trusted as my concealed carry gun of choice. That number is one digit long.
It’s probably once a week that a friend, family member, or acquaintance asks me for recommendations on what gun they should carry. The answer is never cut and dry, because everyone is different; instead, it is a list of criteria for what to look for in a carry gun. I then follow up with a list of firearms I have tested and would trust or have trusted to carry every day. A carry gun should be reliable, accurate, and easily concealable. When it comes to personal preferences and requirements, you should like the ergonomics of the pistol, easily reach the trigger without shifting your grip, and be able to manage the recoil. The Heckler & Koch CC9 certainly passes the first test and, for me, passes all the rest in terms of my personal preferences and requirements.
The CC9 entered a very competitive market of smaller concealable handguns with desirable features and functionality, but the Heckler & Koch name adds more credibility to the firearm. The tests this gun had to pass before launch were extensive, and it is one of the most extensively tested guns HK has released. In summary, the CC9 was drop-tested, frozen to temperatures so cold that employees had to wear gloves to hold it, heated to boiling temperatures where plastics would almost melt, placed in a dust chamber, submerged in clay, and then tested to ensure the gun would fire. Even though the CC9 is a civilian-designed carry pistol, HK utilized NATO and Mil-Spec tests to assess the gun's performance after being submerged in a bucket of sand or coated with clay and then placed in the dust chamber, where swirling winds would replicate tornado-like conditions. The CC9 passed these rigorous tests and is one of the reasons why I recommend it as an option for concealed carry. Now let’s dive into the features that make it even better.
Mirrored Ambidextrous Controls
The CC9 is full ambidextrous with no changes needed whatsoever. That’s right! The magazine release is even ambidextrous, allowing you to release the magazine from either side. There is a slide stop on both sides as well to lock the slide to the rear. The CC9 also features a Picatinny rail for attaching a light that can be activated from either side.
All of the Internal Safeties
Heckler & Koch wanted to design the safest concealed carry gun possible. The CC9, therefore, has a plethora of internal safety mechanisms. The trigger has a trigger safety built into it, so if it is not compressed with the trigger, the gun cannot fire. There is a firing pin safety that has been thoroughly tested through all the drop tests. HK also designed an out-of-battery safety. Finally, instead of a traditional take-down method where you have to pull the trigger to remove the slide from the gun's frame, HK designed the CC9 to disassemble without requiring this action.
Optic-Ready + Co-Witness Iron Sights with Tritium Front Sight
The CC9 comes optic-ready with an RMSc footprint. You can direct mount any RMSc footprint red dot optic without the need for an optic plate. The iron sights remain on the gun and can co-witness with the optic, depending on the model. The front sight features a high-visibility tritium sight that glows in the dark, making it optimal for home defense or concealed carry.
Aftermarket Accessories & Compatibility
Heckler & Koch, being an internationally popular manufacturer of firearms, will always have aftermarket support. From holsters to optics, weapon lights, magazine extensions, and more, the CC9 allows you a lot of flexibility in choosing aftermarket accessories.
Holosun EPS Carry
I chose to mount a red dot optic with an enclosed emitter onto the CC9 because I know the dot will be exposed to a lot of debris, lint, sweat, and environmental factors like rain or sand. The EPS Carry is available in a variety of reticle options, including multi-reticle systems or single-dot reticles, and in your choice of green or red. The dot height is ultra-low, making it more compatible with factory iron sights. It utilizes a 1620 battery, features Solar Failsafe, and Shake Awake Technology. I have already used the EPS Carry on another compact handgun for over a year and have yet to need to replace the battery. It’s never lost zero, the screws have not backed out, and it’s held up to a lot of abuse.
ANR Design Holsters
Before ordering a holster for any carry gun, ensure you have everything mounted on the gun as you want it. If you mount a red dot optic or add a light to the gun’s rail, for example, you’ll need to order a compatible holster. I’ve been using ANR Design holsters for a while now and have been impressed with both the quality and the build options. Their Inside the Waistband holster is what I use to carry my CC9 concealed. When you order a holster from them, you not only select your dominant hand size and firearm model, but also choose a color or pattern, the mounting hardware, and an option to add a claw. All ANR holsters come optic cut, are set with proper retention, have full trigger guard protection, and are both durable and lightweight.
Final Thoughts
After carrying the Heckler & Koch CC9 for a couple of months now, I can say it is easily concealable, comfortable even when fully loaded, and more pleasurable to shoot than comparable compact handguns. I have been impressed with the accuracy and reliability of this pistol with various ammunition loads. I tested full-metal-jacket 9mm ammunition, flat-nose ammo, Syntech-coated bullets, and various hollow-point defensive loads to see how they would function through the CC9. It ran smoothly and produced good, accurate groups. I settled on the Super Vel +P 115-grain SCHP as my carry ammo of choice and practice with their factory-new 124-grain. Always test the carry ammo you plan to use through the firearm to ensure the gun will cycle it. The CC9 is an excellent handgun for concealed carry, and its price point is just right.
