The Springfield Armory Kuna
By Curt Staubach
Is this the modern day MP5?
Many 9mm PCCs and PDWs on the market today feel overpriced for what they deliver—often offering basic features at a premium price. That’s what makes the Springfield Armory Kuna such a standout. It enters the crowded PDW market at a very competitive price point that comes loaded with features typically reserved for much more expensive builds, making it one of the most well-rounded and affordable compact 9mm platforms currently available.
But is it any good? Let’s break it down.
About Springfrield Armory
Springfield Armory is a leading American firearms manufacturer and importer based in Geneseo, Illinois. Founded in 1974 by the Reese family, the company revived the iconic name and legacy of the historic U.S. government Springfield Armory (established in 1777 under George Washington and closed in 1968). Today, it produces high-quality rifles like the M1A and SAINT series, along with popular handguns such as the XD, Hellcat, and 1911 models, focusing on innovation, reliability, and options for concealed carry, home defense, and enthusiast use

Overview and First Impressions
The Kuna immediately stands out for one reason: roller—delayed blowback. This isn't your standard direct blowback 9mm PCC. If you’ve shot one, you know that the felt recoil from that heavy bolt, cycling back and forth is often higher than you’ll find on even a budget AR-15. Instead, Springfield Armory Kuna took inspiration from historic platforms like the HK MP5, integrating a roller-delayed system that dramatically reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise. For such a compact firearm, this is a big deal—it enhances accuracy and makes follow-up shots faster. Much faster!
At a glance, the Kuna looks like a cross between a subgun and a futuristic compact rifle. It has a 6.25 inch, cold hammer-forged barrel with Melonite finish, a monolithic aluminum upper receiver, and fully ambidextrous controls. Weighing in at around 5.9 pounds unloaded, it balances extremely well in the hand and feels solid without being overbuilt.
Reliability
The Kuna wasn’t originally built for the civilian market—it was first developed by HS Produkt—a Springfield Armory partner who brought us the XD Series, Hellcat, and Echelon pistol lines. The Kuna was designed to be a compact, mission-ready platform for counter-terrorism units, law enforcement, and military groups around the world. That means it’s already been through extensive testing and real-world evaluation in high stakes environments well before landing in the hands of U.S. civilians. From its ultra-reliable roller-delayed system to its compact, modular design, the Kuna was engineered to meet the demands of professionals who rely on their weapons in life or death situations. That kind of pedigree adds a lot of confidence when you're evaluating a PDW not just for range use, but for defensive or duty applications.
I’ve personally put close to 3000 rounds through the Kuna and had no issues whatsoever. Mostly 115gr and some 124gr ammo. I’ve shot it both unsuppressed and suppressed and it ran perfectly in both scenarios. I also have yet to clean it and it’s still running flawlessly.
Build Quality and Construction
The monolithic upper includes integrated M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, giving you space to add lights, lasers, or foregrips. But keep in mind that with its compact size, you don’t have a lot of room to add accessories. You’ve only got two rows of M-lok to work with and still need room for your hand. But I could definitely see mounting a weapon light. The full-length top Picatinny rail ensures compatibility with red dots or other optics. The firearm ships with hybrid flip-up iron sights integrated into the Pic rail. Flipped down you have standard irons. Flip them up for peep sights that will co-witness with your red dot if you want.
One of the most appreciated touches is the non-reciprocating side-charging handle. It folds flat against the receiver and can be swapped to either side of the firearm. Combined with ambidextrous safety selectors and magazine releases, the Kuna’s manual of arms is easy and intuitive for both left and right-handed shooters.
The brake works extremely well but can be easily removed and a direct-thread suppressor can be added to the Kuna’s standard 1/2x28 threaded barrel for a much quieter range session.
Roller-Delayed Blowback: Why it Matters!
What separates the Kuna from its competition and makes it far more than just another 9mm AR, is its roller-delayed blowback action. This design dramatically reduces bolt velocity and weight, which in turn decreases felt recoil impulse and keeps the muzzle flatter during rapid fire. That means faster follow-up shots and tighter groups under pressure.
For context, standard blowback designs in this size category often struggle with harsh recoil due to the heavy bolt mass required. The roller-delay system changes the game. The result? Shooting the Kuna feels like cheating. It’s smooth, easy to control, and confidence inspiring.
Shooting Performance
At the range, the Kuna is an absolute pleasure to shoot. Even with standard-pressure 115 grain, range ammo, the recoil is minimal. The muzzle brake helps keep the gun flat and the well balanced weight prevents excessive front end dip or sway.
Thanks to the roller-delay action, it feels more like shooting a full-sized and well-tuned 5.56 rifle than a compact 9mm pistol. Muzzle rise is negligible and follow-up shots are almost automatic. In rapidfire drills at 7 and 15 yards, the Kuna stayed on target effortlessly.
I took some newer shooters to the range recently and they shot both the Kuna and a direct blowback AR-9. All of them preferred the Kuna and voiced how much more enjoyable it was to shoot.
The flat face trigger has almost no takeup and a nice break with a very short reset. When dry firing, the break might feel a tad mushy when compared to other firearms, but when actually shooting the Kuna, that mushiness is non-existent. This gun shoots fast and with ease and the trigger feels great when putting rounds downrange. I tried my hardest to overrun this trigger and I couldn’t do it..
Variants & Pricing
Springfield currently offers the Kuna in two configurations:
- Standard model (without brace): MSRP $999
- Brace model (with Strike Industries FSA folding brace): MSRP $1,149
The Strike Industries brace is a well chosen addition. It folds to the side for compact concealability but provides solid support when extended. Strike Industries does sell a cheek riser separately that would make for a much needed addition to this brace. For users in brace-restricted states, the non-brace model is still an excellent option as well.
Downsides and Considerations
While the Kuna hits nearly all the right notes, it’s not without minor drawbacks:
- Proprietary magazines: They work well, but the lack the aftermarket support of Glock or Scorpion mags is disappointing. That said, Kuna mags are inexpensive.
- Safety Selector: The throw on the safety selector is rather long and stiff. Think MP5 safety rather than AR-15 safety. It has a long throw and can be in the way a bit while in the fire position.
- Strike Industries Brace: Although the brace looks great and fits the lines of the Kuna perfectly, the lack of a cheek riser is disappointing. I also had to go back and retighten the brace more than once. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a solidly built brace that looks great and functions well. But if you have another folding or collapsible brace that you prefer, you can get the Kuna without a brace and add your own.
Final Verdict
The Springfield Armory Kuna is a modern PDW that combines proven engineering with modern design features. It's compact, controllable, and versatile enough for a variety of roles. The roller-delayed blowback system is what truly sets it apart, delivering smooth, manageable shooting that outperforms most PDW and 9mm PCC competitors.
While the price might give some shooters pause, the value is absolutely there—especially if you're looking for a compact 9mm platform that prioritizes reliability, performance, and build quality. Whether you're a seasoned shooter, a defensive-minded citizen, or a gear enthusiast looking for the perfect range toy, the Kuna deserves a serious look.
