DERYA DY9Z

By Rachel Stroud

In a market full of striker-fired 9mm pistols, it takes more than a new finish or a long feature list to stand out. The Derya DY9Z earned GOA's Empowered 2A Gun of the Year.

Instead of chasing trends, Derya focuses on delivering what shooters are already asking for: capacity, optics compatibility, and a platform that’s easy to pick up and run, all wrapped in a price point that makes you do a double-take.

What is it

The Derya DY9Z is a striker-fired 9mm built with everyday carry in mind that balances size, capacity, and shootability. This is a 15+1 setup in a slim, lightweight frame that’s comfortable enough to carry all day, but still feels planted when it’s time to put rounds downrange.

It comes optics-ready right out of the box with an RMSc cut, paired with simple, effective U-notch rear sight and white front dot for quick target acquisition. The interchangeable backstraps let you fine-tune your grip, while the Melonite-coated slide is built to handle everyday wear without a second thought. It’s a straightforward pistol designed to do its job, whether that’s EDC, home defense, or just putting in reps at the range.

Who are they

Derya Arms is a Turkish manufacturer founded in 1998, producing firearms across multiple categories. With a growing focus on the U.S. market, the company is leaning into what American shooters are actually asking for. The DY9Z is a direct reflection of that shift.

If you want a deeper look at where they’re headed, Dustin from Derya sits down with John and Kailey on the State of the Second Podcast to talk about future plans, including expanding U.S. production and continuing to build based on real user feedback.

First Thoughts — What’s in the Box

I have the DY9Z Black Cherry in hand and right out of the box, it just makes sense. Nothing overdone, nothing confusing. It’s also worth noting that the DY9Z comes in an assortment of color options.

It ships in a DERYA case with custom foam and includes the pistol itself, a 15-round metal magazine, three interchangeable backstraps (small, medium, large), a basic cleaning kit, guide rod, and standard documentation.

In the hand, the grip texture feels balanced and not too aggressive. The undercut trigger guard and beavertail help you settle into a higher grip naturally.

I put a couple hundred rounds through it using both the included magazine andGlock 43X-pattern mags to check compatibility and everything ran as expected.

I’m looking forward to putting in more time behind it and following up with a full review after some more range work.

Empowered 2A

“Gun of the Year”

The DY9Z didn’t earn it’s title because it’s flashy. It won because it checks the right boxes. It’s optics-ready out of the box, offers strong capacity for its size, runs on a familiar, easy-to-use platform, and maintains compatibility with widely available magazines.

Add in the price point and it’s certainly going to get attention for all the right reasons.
