From Tax Stamp to Trigger Pull: The Complete Guide to Choosing, Mounting, and Tuning a Suppressor

I’ve been calling 2026 the Year of the Suppressor, as there is no better time than right now to buy a suppressor. The e-filing process is quick and somewhat painless, wait times are the shortest they’ve ever been, and the $200 tax stamp has been reduced to $0. There are hundreds of suppressors to choose from, and technology has taken suppressor manufacturing to a whole new level. Nowadays, you can buy or make your own machined suppressor or a completely 3D-printed one. Suppressors are being made from titanium, Inconel, stainless steel, aluminum, and more. Because of all this new technology and how great a time it is for new suppressor manufacturers to come online, there is an overwhelming number of options. And it’s not just about choosing the right suppressor but also figuring out how to mount it and troubleshooting any issues with the gun you mount it on. Hopefully, with this guide, you’ll gain clarity into what to look for in a suppressor, understand mounting options, and have a better idea of what it takes to make a gun run reliably with a suppressor.

The Suppressor Paperwork Process

If you’ve never bought a suppressor, there are several ways you can go about buying a suppressor. Just like I recommend visiting a gun shop that rents guns to try a gun before you buy, I recommend finding an SOT (Special Occupational Taxpayer) that does suppressor demos to try suppressors before you buy. An SOT is an annual tax status that an FFL (Federal Firearms License) pays to legally buy, sell, manufacture, or import highly regulated items under the National Firearms Act (NFA). My SOT, Tennessee Silencer, rents machine guns, has dozens of suppressors you can demo before making a purchase, and does all the paperwork needed to legally own a suppressor. You will need to have a passport-style photo taken, your fingerprints scanned, and a driver’s license to apply for a tax stamp. There are websites like Silencer Shop that offer the option to buy a suppressor online and complete the required paperwork and fingerprinting, for example, at a local dealer with a Silencer Shop kiosk. If you have tried a suppressor before and you know you liked it, this is an easy way to purchase your own.

The next thing to decide before making a purchase is whether you want to be the sole owner/responsible person for a suppressor, or place it in a trust so multiple people can access it. You have the options of filling out an Individual Form 4 or creating an NFA Gun Trust. If you do a Form 4 as an individual, you are responsible for overseeing the use of the suppressor. You cannot give it to a friend or family member to use unless you are physically present to oversee its use. On an NFA trust, you can add multiple “responsible persons” who can possess, use, and transport the suppressor without you having to be physically present. If you want to pass down NFA items to children or grandchildren, for example, a trust is an easy way to set this up so co-trustees or beneficiaries can retain ownership of any items in the trust without needing to file any additional paperwork or tax stamps.


Choosing a Suppressor

Sound & Tone

Just like choosing a gun, only you can decide what suppressor is best for you. The major difference from one person to another is how a suppressor sounds. Being able to try a suppressor before you buy is one of the best ways to choose a suppressor, as one of the primary reasons to own a suppressor is to reduce the sound of gunfire. When someone shoots a suppressor, the perceived sound and tone can be completely different based on our hearing. You can watch YouTube videos or Instagram reels all day of people shooting dozens of suppressors, but there is so much variation in how sound is recorded that I can just about guarantee a suppressor won’t sound the same in person as it does on video.

The other aspect of sound and tone is how a suppressor sounds on the first shot vs. the 10th. “First round pop” is a phenomenon where the first shot sounds louder than subsequent shots because, during the first time firing the gun, the inside of the suppressor is filled with nothing but oxygen. Each round after filters through gases more so than oxygen, making it a much quieter experience. Always fire multiple shots when testing a suppressor, as the sound and tone can improve significantly after the first shot.

Without getting too far into the weeds, your choice in ammunition plays a massive part in how a suppressor sounds. Subsonic ammunition, moving slower than the speed of sound, will sound much quieter than supersonic ammunition, which moves faster than the speed of sound and will have a loud sonic crack downrange. If you don’t plan on purchasing subsonic ammunition or suppressor-friendly ammunition, just know you might not get the best performance possible from your chosen suppressor.

Caliber & Purpose

You need to decide on what caliber suppressor you want and have an idea of how you plan to use it. This will not only help you choose the right caliber suppressor but also help you decide how you might want to attach it. For example, if you have a .22LR rifle you use to hunt small game, and you’re trying to be respectful of your neighbors, you probably only need a direct mount .22LR caliber suppressor that will stay on that one gun. If you have multiple rifles or AR pistols chambered in 5.56 and 300 Blackout, you might want a 30-caliber suppressor along with QD-style mounts for all the guns, so you can swap the suppressor from one gun or pistol to another in seconds.

Length & Weight

The caliber and purpose of the suppressor are important to decide on first, as it will help you determine what overall length and what material you might want your suppressor to be. For example, if you have a dedicated 6.5 Creedmoor rifle that you plan to hunt with this fall, you might want to look for a lightweight and short or over-the-barrel design suppressor so you’re not adding a ton of weight to your hunting rifle. If you’re building or have an SBR or AR pistol at home for self-defense, you might not care about additional weight, but you might want to stick with a short suppressor (K-can, for example) so you can still easily maneuver through your house. One word of advice: be sure to calculate not just the overall length and weight of the suppressor, but the suppressor and whatever mounting system you choose.


Mounting a Suppressor

Direct Thread

The easiest way to mount a suppressor is using the direct thread method. This means you simply remove the thread protector or factory muzzle device and screw the suppressor on, and you’re up and running. Make sure you order the correct caliber suppressor with the correct thread pitch compatible with your gun model. The pros to having a direct thread suppressor are that you can guarantee its compatibility and you don’t have to spend any more money on or wait on a muzzle device or HUB system setup to start using your suppressor. This also reduces weight by avoiding additional devices and attachments on the gun. The downside to direct thread mounting is that suppressors are more susceptible to carbon buildup and can lock onto a gun, requiring significant torque to get back off. Threads can wear down more easily if you are constantly screwing and unscrewing the suppressor. Direct thread suppressors are also known to loosen or back off the threads when they don’t have a mechanical locking mechanism keeping them on the gun. Overall, this is still the best method for installing a dedicated suppressor onto a gun, as a lot of the cons are negated when you don’t plan to take the suppressor off anyway.

Some suppressor manufacturers offer the same model suppressor, but in your choice of direct thread or QD/HUB. This means you must select which version suppressor you want to order, which can sometimes limit you to only that option. That means if, in the future, you want to use a HUB-style mount or a QD muzzle device, you’d have to purchase a new suppressor. This isn’t always the case but is something to confirm before checking out.

Quick Detach (QD)

If you have multiple guns you plan to use a single suppressor with, using a QD-style mounting system on all the guns makes it easy to swap the suppressor from one gun to the next. This mounting style typically consists of a muzzle brake or flash hider and a quick-detach suppressor adapter. Some suppressor manufacturers already have their own QD mounting system and might have the adapter built into their suppressors. A few of the more popular QD mounting systems include Dead Air KeyMo, SilencerCo ASR, Q Plan B, and Tri-Lug. As I mentioned earlier, be sure to factor in the weight and length of a QD setup if these factors are important in choosing the right suppressor setup for you. The biggest benefit of QD is that, in general, it provides a locking mechanism that helps secure the suppressor onto your gun. Of course, it also makes it super easy to swap a suppressor over from one gun to another, even if the guns are different calibers and have different thread pitch patterns. All you have to do is keep compatible muzzle devices installed on each firearm, and you can mount your suppressor in seconds. The downside to QD, especially when using across multiple firearms, is the added cost of buying multiple mounts or muzzle devices. There is also some risk of carbon lock between a suppressor and the QD mount, so routine maintenance and cleaning is important.

HUB

The HUB mount uses an industry-standard 1.375x24 thread pitch and allows you to easily swap the rear adapters on your suppressor. You can then direct thread or use a QD-style system with your suppressor and firearm of choice. When a suppressor is released as HUB-compatible, that means it can be used on hundreds, if not thousands, of hosts. With HUB compatibility, you can mix and match mounting accessories, easily find a mount that will work for your needs, and ultimately have one suppressor that can mount to any of your guns using a compatible thread pitch HUB adapter. I think more suppressor manufacturers are looking to produce HUB-compatible suppressors to make it easy to “future-proof” their suppressors to be compatible with anything a suppressor owner already has on their guns at home. The downside to HUB compatibility can be stacking tolerances, especially between brands. If a QD mount isn’t of good quality or the threads on a HUB adapter are off, it can lead to concentricity issues or even baffle strikes. Another downside is that a universal-style rear-opening design, like HUB, can limit a suppressor designer's control over initial gas flow and blast-chamber geometry, which can marginally affect maximum sound suppression compared to proprietary mounts.

Tuning a Suppressor to a Gun

These days, you can suppress pistols, rifles, and shotguns. And, because there are thousands of gun options and variants, adding a suppressor can affect how reliably a gun runs. Some guns will not run reliably suppressed without modifications. Depending on rifle barrel length, you might need an adjustable gas block on your gun. If you aren’t sure which rifle might be best for suppressed shooting, I recommend considering an adjustable gas-piston-driven rifle over a fixed gas block direct-impingement rifle. A few examples of gas piston rifles that make excellent suppressor hosts are the IWI Carmel, the HK MR556 A4, and the IWI ARAD 5. These rifles make it easy to adjust the amount of gas by rotating the piston.

When it comes to pistols, you most likely will need a piston and potentially a lighter recoil spring in your gun. While I don’t plan to cover modular suppressors in this article, it’s also important to note that some suppressors are available in short or long configurations and even allow the end user to add or remove baffles. Most shotgun suppressors will allow you to change the baffle stacks to configure your shotgun with the right number of baffles for it to run reliably shot after shot. This can take some time to tune to your ammunition and will require testing in different temperatures and environments if you plan to travel with your shotgun.

Adjustable Gas Block

I’ve been using adjustable gas blocks for years in almost all my competition AR-15 rifles. Even though I can’t compete in most shooting sports with a suppressor, I can tune my rifle to my ammunition, muzzle device, and buffer system to shoot flat and with minimal felt recoil simply by adjusting how much gas moves through my BCG. An adjustable gas block is my go-to recommendation for anyone struggling to get an AR-style rifle to run reliably with a suppressor. One of my favorite suppressor hosts is the Midwest Industries CRM HD rifle that comes with the RIFLESPEED adjustable gas block installed. This gas block is super easy to use and doesn’t require any tools to adjust the gas setting. Simply rotate the gas block with your hand and watch the gas setting number increase or decrease. I have shot the Midwest Industries rifle with 55- to 77-grain .223 and 5.56 NATO ammunition, using a Thunder Beast Arms SPIRO suppressor, and have found settings 6 to 9 to work best, depending on the ammunition. Not only does the adjustable gas block ensure sufficient gas flow for the rifle to cycle, but it also helps tune the gun's felt recoil with different types of ammunition.

There are other options on the market, such as Superlative Arms’ direct-impingement adjustable gas blocks, but these do require you to install and tune using a long HEX key to reach the block from under the handguard. I’ve used these on my 300 Blackout AR pistols and a .308 AR-10 rifle build and have had zero issues with these over the years. I built the AR pistols for home defense and the AR-10 for hunting. Once I find a gas setting that works reliably with the ammunition I plan to use for each gun, I don’t ever adjust the gas block setting. I set it and leave it.

Once You Go Suppressed…

Trust me, once you buy your first suppressor, you’ll never want to shoot unsuppressed again. I started my journey into suppressors pretty recently a few years ago, and now I hate shooting unsuppressed. I don’t hunt without a suppressor. If I can compete with a suppressor, I do. I also shoot a lot in my backyard, so it’s the polite thing to do for my neighbors. The addiction will probably set in for you too, so here’s your warning that it’s hard to go back once you start shooting suppressed!
